Best Camping at Yosemite National Park, USA

Yosemite National Park in California is one of the most beautiful camping destinations in the United States. Famous for its enormous granite cliffs, waterfalls, giant sequoias, forests, and mountain scenery, Yosemite offers an unforgettable experience for campers and outdoor lovers.

 Best Time for Camping

The main camping season is generally spring through fall, although some campgrounds remain open during winter. Summer offers warmer weather and easier access to many areas, but campsites are extremely popular.

For 2026, Yosemite does not require an entrance reservation, but campground reservations are still required at many campgrounds.

 Popular Campgrounds

Some of the best-known campgrounds include:

  • Upper Pines Campground – Located in Yosemite Valley and open year-round.
  • Lower Pines Campground – A beautiful Valley campground with views of the surrounding cliffs.
  • North Pines Campground – Close to the Merced River and Yosemite Valley attractions.
  • Camp 4 – A famous tent-only campground popular with climbers; in 2026 it costs $10 per person per night during its reservation season.
  • Wawona Campground – Located near the southern part of the park.
  • Tuolumne Meadows Campground – A high-elevation campground surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.

 What to Do While Camping

Camping in Yosemite isn't just about staying in a tent. Visitors can enjoy:

🥾 Hiking through Yosemite Valley

🏔️ Viewing Half Dome and El Capitan

💦 Visiting Yosemite Falls

🌲 Exploring giant sequoia groves

📸 Photography and sightseeing

🌌 Stargazing at night

🏕️ Relaxing beside the campground

🧗 Rock climbing in designated areas

Important Safety Rules

Yosemite is home to black bears and other wildlife, so food storage is extremely important. Campers must follow Yosemite's food-storage regulations to prevent wildlife from becoming accustomed to human food.

Campfires are allowed in designated fire rings when permitted, but restrictions can apply depending on conditions and location.

Also, you cannot simply sleep in your car or RV in a parking lot or along the road. Overnight vehicle sleeping is allowed only in a registered campsite.

 Reservations

Yosemite camping is very popular, especially from spring through early fall. Many campgrounds release reservations five months in advance, while some release sites two weeks or one week before the arrival date. Popular sites can sell out extremely quickly.

If your preferred campground is full, checking regularly for cancellations can help because cancelled campsites become available again.

What to Bring

For a Yosemite camping trip, consider bringing:

  • Tent and sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Warm and waterproof clothing
  • Hiking shoes
  • Water bottle
  • Food and cooking equipment
  • Flashlight or headlamp
  • First-aid kit
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Bear-safe food-storage equipment as required
